SANTA FE — Clovis High’s girls got junior guard Teya Morris back on Saturday night, at least on a limited basis.
It wasn’t enough to help them hold on, though, as Santa Fe High used a big third quarter to overhaul the Lady Wildcats 57-52 in a District 2-6A matchup.
The win pushed the Demonettes (10-14, 3-5 district) a game up on the Lady Cats (9-15, 2-6) for fourth place in the district, with two regular-season games remaining.
“The girls played hard and gave themselves a chance,” CHS girls coach Jeff Reed said. “We just turned the ball over (too much).”
Sophomore guard Taylor Salazar boosted Santa Fe High over the top, scoring a game-best 22 points. She had three of the Demonettes’ four 3-pointers and was 11-for-12 from the free throw line.
In the end, free throws were the difference. Both teams shot 28, but Clovis made just 15 compared to 21 for the Demonettes.
CHS held Santa Fe High to seven second-quarter points in building a 23-19 halftime lead, but the Demonettes came back with a 23-point third quarter.
Morris, averaging nearly 18 points before going down early in district play with a knee injury, was limited to just four minutes a quarter after missing the past six games, Reed said. She finished with seven points.
Sophomore Kaydee Weaver led the Lady Cats with 14 points, but no one else reached double figures. Junior guard Kaya Suina added 10 points for Santa Fe High, which was without junior guard Adonica Baca-Martinez due to a concussion.
“Both sides had things they had to overcome,” Reed said. “It came down to free throws — they hit six more than we did.”
The Lady Cats travel to Sandia on Tuesday before closing out district and regular-season play at home on Saturday against La Cueva.
