Man accused of shooting officer found guilty in unrelated case

A Clovis man accused of shooting a Clovis police officer last year was found guilty Tuesday on an unrelated felony case, according to a release from the district attorney’s office.

Anthony Baca, 34, was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. District Judge Fred Van Soelen presided over the trial, which finished shortly after noon following a 15-minute deliberation by a Curry County Jury.

Van Soelen sentenced Baca to two-and-a-half years in prison. The sentence included a one-year enhancement for a previous felony conviction.

The charge stemmed from a burglary call, where law enforcement said Baca threatened the caller with a knife.

Baca faces five other separate cases, including a case connected to the shooting of Clovis Officer Chris Caron.

An attempt to contact Baca’s attorney, Brett Carter, was unsuccessful Tuesday evening.
