Meetings watch: Clovis City Commission

The Clovis city commission will consider closing a section of Main Street six times between April and September for an endeavor called First Saturday Main Street Market.

During the commission’s 5:15 p.m. meeting today at the Clovis-Carver Public Library’s North Annex, Lisa Kia will pitch the idea to close the section of Main Street between Purdue and Commerce from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month.

Kia is offering to pay the $150 street closure fee and provide liability insurance for the events. The market, as envisioned by Kia, would include area vendors selling their products on the street. Kia would collect vendor fees but plans to offer free space to non-profit organizations.

The item is designated as a discussion item for the commission with a city manager recommendation to approve.

Other agenda items include:

• A 4:45 p.m. executive session to discuss acquisition or disposal of property or water rights.

• A budget transfer of $26,457 to install a concrete basketball court at Pat Sandoval Park.

• Requests to rename a pair of library rooms to the Don McAlavy Southwest Room and the Harold Kilmer Genealogy Room.

• A waiver of city landfill dumping fees from noon May 5 to noon May 8 in connection with that weekend’s Great American Cleanup.

• Introduction of an ordinance to change the 500 blocks of Ash and Hickory streets from residential single family to mixed development.

The item was recommended last week by the planning and zoning committee. Damian Houfek of Zia Holding Corporation said the zone change was requested for a building, previously owned by ENMRSH, Inc., to be used for commercial purposes. Residents against the change say a 13 percent protest rate is artificially low because ENMRSH owns much of the surrounding property.

• A request to approve the city’s audit report for the prior fiscal year. The audit from Hinkle and Landers had two findings on material adjustments and capital asset tracking.
