Peanut Valley Toastmasters
On Feb. 9, Peanut Valley Toastmasters held its weekly meeting from 7 p.m.–8 p.m. at the KENW Broadcast Center in Portales.
Club Sergeant at Arms Kenny Welborn presented a speech titled ‘The Taste of Freedom’ and member James Idsinga evaluated him. Guest Brian Stover won best speaker with his sixth speech from the competent communicator manual, ‘The Accent of Life,’ and Club Secretary Jon Barr evaluated. James Idsinga won best table topics for his impromptu speech on the best thing that happened to him. In addition, previous guest Sydney Smith became a new member of the club.
Toastmasters provides a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth. Meetings are held every Thursday at 7 p.m. at the KENW Broadcast Center in Portales. Guests are welcome.

The Curry County Extension Club Council officers for 2017 are President Connie Miller, from Home at Heart Club; Vice President Lee Ellen Phipps, from Quilty
Pleasures Extension Club; Secretary Carol Moore, from the Just Us Extension Club; Treasurer Helen Casaus from the Home at Heart Club; and Carol Nash, from the Grady Alpha Club.
Daughters of the American Revolution
El Portal Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its Feb. 11 meeting at Central Christian Church in Portales.
Program for the meeting was the American History Essay and High School Good Citizens. The meeting was called to order by Regent Vicky Stratton. Opening rituals were followed and a break in the meeting was called to honor the essay winners and their individual essays. 23 guests, including family members and teachers, were in attendance. American History winners ere fifth-grader Victoria Stover of Clovis Christian School, sixth-grader Ali May Terry of Floyd Municipal Schools, seventh-grader Zachary Koegl of Clovis Christian School and eighth-grader Alyssa Bargas of Elida Municipal Schools. Good Citizens of area high schools were Reagan Truex, Elida High School senior, Samantha Gonzales, co-winner from Clovis High School, and Rachel Mason of Clovis High School, also a state essay winner.
