1962: Two Dumas, Texas, men received prison sentences of 1-10 years for cattle theft.

Roosevelt County Sheriff Glenn Widener and Brand Inspector James Williams traced three stolen Holstein heifers to Dumas.

The Texans pleaded guilty to charges of "theft of meat on the hoof," United Press International reported.

The animals belonged to Roosevelt County Rancher Willie Storch.

Dumas is about 200 miles from Portales.

1962: President Kennedy clasped John Glenn's hand and pinned a medal on his coat to climax a frenzied welcome-home celebration for America's first man in orbit.

"The freckle-faced Marine, wearing his 40 years lightly, disclaimed credit for his magnificent three-orbit leap around the world," United Press International reported.

"He said, 'This is not a one-man show; it is a team effort.'"
