MORIARTY — The Portales High girls basketball team turned in a shining performance on Thursday night, beating Moriarty 56-38 on the road to advance to the District 4-4A championship.
Portales (16-9) was led by the duo of Zamorye Cox and Taylee Rippee, who scored 21 and 19 points, respectively. Lindsay Blakey came close to a double-double, turning in eight points along with 10 rebounds over the Lady Pintos (18-7).
“It wasn’t anything in particular, (Cox and Rippee) just took what the defense gave them,” said Lady Rams coach Wade Fraze. “They did that in the flow of the game.”
The win now pits the Lady Rams against Hope Christian in Saturday’s 3 p.m. tourney championship in Albuquerque.
Something Fraze has stressed all season long is that when the Lady Rams are right, it’s when they are doing all the “little things” and doing them on a consistent basis.
“We got out to a good start tonight and we played for four quarters,” Fraze said of the team’s performance. “The little things to be successful, and we did it for the entire game.”
The win gives Portales some momentum going into Saturday’s tilt, but Fraze hopes it carries through beyond this Saturday.
“We just want to continue to improve, take that momentum and continue to find success like we did in this game, through the district championship and into the state tournament,” he said.
