TEXICO — The Texico Wolverines were struggling at halftime Thursday night. They got things turned around in the second half.
Senior guard Braden Fraze led three Texico players in double figures with 14 points and the Wolverines (20-7) outscored Clayton 32-17 in the second half for a 51-36 win, advancing to Saturday's 6 p.m. District 5-3A tournament final at Santa Rosa.
Texico coach Scott Karger said there was no big secret to the turnaround after halftime.
"I think we just came out and picked up the intensity a little bit," he said. "We were a little lethargic to start the game."
Senior guard Lance Myers added 12 points and sophomore guard Dalton Thatcher finished with 11 for the Wolverines. Jacob Navarro had three 3-pointers and took game scoring honors with 15 points for the Yellowjackets (12-14).
Dora 63, Logan 58, OT — At Dora, the second-seeded Coyotes had to fight uphill most of the night, but rallied to force overtime and finally subdued the Longhorns in a District 6-2A semifinal.
Dora (20-7), which trailed by six points entering the final quarter, advances to Saturday's 6 p.m. tournament championship game at top-seeded Fort Sumner.
Junior guard Aaron Jasso converted a game-tying three-point play late in regulation and 6-foot-5 junior post Xavier Gramzow kept it that was with two blocked shots as time wound down. The Coyotes then scored the first four points in the extra session and were never headed.
Jasso finished with 18 points and junior Zac Dewbre added 12 for Dora. The Longhorns (8-17) were led by 19 points from junior Mason Collins, while juniors Coltin Roach and Gabe Randolph added 14 and 10, respectively.
Melrose 49, Grady 38 — In District 4-1A, the top-seeded Buffaloes pulled away gradually to turn back the Bronchos. Melrose (21-6), the defending Class 1A state champion, hosts second-seeded San Jon in Saturday's 6 p.m. finale.
Only 6-5 junior forward Jordan Jasso reached double figures for Melrose with 11 points, but four others finished with at least six points.
Fourth-seeded Grady (11-16) kept the game close much of the way. Freshman Chisum Rush finished with a game-high 18 points for the Bronchos.
San Jon 48, Floyd 45 — In another 4-1A semifinal at San Jon, the Coyotes won a nip-and-tuck affair from the Bronchos behind junior forward Jacob Thurman's 19 points.
The teams were separated by no more than two points in any quarter. Junior guard Adrian Borrego led the third-seeded Bronchos (14-12) with 18 points.
San Jon (12-7) managed only 13 field goals, but got to the line 34 times and hit just enough of them to pull out the contest.
