ENMU basketball capsules - Feb. 25

Men

Texas A&M-Kingsville (16-10, 9-8 LSC) at ENMU (13-14, 7-10).

Last time out: Thursday. The Greyhounds kept their LSC tournament hopes alive with their fifth-straight conference win, 82-66 over Angelo State. The Javelinas topped Western New Mexico 74-61.

Last meeting: Jan. 19, TAMU-K 72-64. The Javelinas have won four of their last five against the Greyhounds.

Significance for ENMU: The Greyhounds will claim the seventh seed in the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament with a win. With a loss, their season depends on Western New Mexico (2-23, 0-17) upsetting Angelo State (14-11, 6-11). Midwestern State (15-13, 7-11), which ended its regular season on Tuesday, gets the eighth seed if either ENMU or ASU lose and the seventh seed if both lose. The Mustangs hold a tiebreaker over ENMU, and Angelo State holds both a two-way tiebreaker over MSU and the three-way tiebreaker if all three finish 7-11. In that instance, Angelo would receive the seventh seed, at which point the tiebreaker process starts over and gives MSU the eighth seed.

Significance for Kingsville: The Javelinas are in sixth place, half a game behind Cameron (17-11, 10-8). To pass the Aggies for the No. 5 seed, they need a win today, a Texas-Permian Basin loss (at home against Texas A&M-Commerce) and a Tarleton State win (at West Texas A&M). The Falcons and Texans are fighting for the top two seeds, and will face either ENMU, ASU or MSU in Thursday’s quarterfinals at Allen, Texas.

Notes: Entering Thursday, the Javelinas led NCAA Division II in 3-point FG defense (29 percent), and they’re 12th in overall defensive field goal percentage (.400). … Kingsville has two players averaging double figures in senior G Duan Wright (12.4 ppg) and junior forward Trey Sumpter (10.3. ... The Hounds, who started 2-10 in LSC play, have their first five-game conference streak since the 2003-04 squad reeled off six in a row. ENMU needs a win today and an upset in next week’s quaterfinals against UTPB or WT to notch its first .500 season since a 14-13 mark in 2013-14 — the final season for Andrew Helton.

Women

Texas A&M-Kingsville (12-13, 7-12 LSC) at ENMU (20-6, 16-3).

Last time out: Both teams suffered setbacks Thursday. ENMU fell 89-82 against second-place Angelo State, while Kingsville became a trivia answer — first-year LSC member Western New Mexico was 0-18 in conference before topping Kingsville 75-67.

Last meeting: Jan. 19, ENMU 63-52.

Notes: Thursday’s games mean the Greyhounds and Javelinas will see each other twice in a row — today and the 5 p.m. (MST) Thursday first-round matchup in the LSC postseason tournament in Allen, Texas. The Greyhounds clinched the No. 1 seed a week ago, and the Javelinas’ loss to Western New Mexico put them out of contention for the No. 7 seed. ... Both teams have marked improvement from last season. The Greyhounds, picked to finish eighth in conference following their 2015-16 season (10-17, 5-11 overall), have doubled their win total and are two wins from matching the school record, set in the 1992-93 season. Kingsville, coming off an 0-16 LSC campaign and a 5-21 overall season, were tabbed for 11th. It’s the Javelina’s best season since an 18-10 campaign seven years ago. ... G Kaylin Roher leads the Javelinas at 10.8 points per game and is two 3-pointers away from fifth place on the school’s all-time list.
