Cats, Lady Cats third in Lovington tournament

LOVINGTON — Clovis High’s tennis teams opened the season with a reasonably good outing over the weekend in the Lea County Open.

Both CHS squads finished 3-2 and were third in the six-school event, featuring round-robin miniduals. Hobbs swept all five matches on both sides, while Lovington on the boys side and St. Michael’s for the girls both went 4-1 to take second.

Meantime, the Portales boys finished fourth and the girls were fifth, with all three of their team victories coming on tiebreakers for games won in the tournament.

Clovis and Portales played each other in Friday’s early matches, with the CHS boys posting a 4-0 victory over the Rams and the Lady Wildcats getting past PHS 3-1. The Wildcats also defeated Artesia 3-1 and St. Michael’s 3-1 while dropping 4-0 decisions to Hobbs and Lovington.

“I was happy for our first tournament,” CHS coach Brenna Silveira said. “We got to play in the wind and cold. We definitely saw what we need to work on and what we have to fix.”

Senior Rojan Angadi and freshman David Heath led the Cats, each going 2-0 in singles. The Cats went 5-5 in singles matches and 4-6 in doubles.

The Lady Cats were 4-6 in singles and 5-5 in doubles. The tandems of senior Kylie Brooks and junior Jadan Andersen at No. 1 and junior Adrian Salais and Andrea Abril at No. 2 each went 2-0 in doubles.

The PHS boys managed just four wins, but it was enough to get them 2-2 splits against Artesia and St. Michael’s and the Rams won the tiebreakers in both. Senior Zach Laurenz played four singles matches for Portales, winning three of them, with junior Javier Gutierrez picking up the other win.

“My players are improving quite a bit,” Rams coach Logan Brown said. “I was pleased with how we played.”

The Lady Rams, who also finished with four wins for the weekend, got their lone team victory after splitting against Artesia.

“I think we played really well with our limited practice time so far,” Lady Rams coach Anne-Marie Bucksath said.

Clovis squads are slated to compete in a tournament at Levelland on Thursday. Meantime, the Rams and Lady Rams don’t have their next outing until March 16, when they return to Lovington to compete in dual matches.
