Girls state pairings released

The New Mexico Activities Association released state basketball tournament brackets for all six classifications, with 10 local teams receiving seeds.

Elida, Melrose, Texico and Logan all garnered either No. 1 or No. 2 seeds.

The girls first-round games will be Friday at the higher seeds. Winners move on to Albuquerque and Rio Rancho the following week for the final three rounds of the tournament.

Here are seedings affecting local teams:

Class 1A girls: If the bracket goes chalk, there’s a tough battle set for March 10.

Six-time defending small school champ Elida is the top seed in the tournament, and Melrose is the No. 2 seed. The Tigers host Carrizozo.

The two have split four games this season — each winning one regular season, Melrose taking the District 4-1A tiebreaker and Elida winning the district tournament. Each of the last two games have gone to overtime.

Melrose did finish ahead of Elida in district play with the tiebreaker, but Rule 7.11 — which requires teams be seeded below teams with better district finishes — applies only to outright district champions.

Melrose, moved down to 1A this season, had won the last two Class 2A titles. The Lady Buffs host No. 15 Reserve.

• The Tigers (22-6) could have a state championship rematch in the second round, as Grady hosts Cimarron in the 8-9 game.

• Floyd is the 14th seed, and will face Roy/Mosquero on the road.

The championship is 11:30 a.m. March 10 at The Pit.

Class 2A girls: A local matchup will begin the first round, with 12-seeded Dora traveling to No. 5 Fort Sumner. The winner will face either No. 4 Mescalero Apache or No. 13 Pine Hill.

• Logan, last year’s runnerup to Melrose, enters as the second seed and will host Jal. Tatum is seeded first, and will host Mesa Vista.

The championship is 5:30 p.m. March 10 at The Pit.

Class 3A girls: Defending champion Texico is the second seed behind Eunice and will host Raton.

• Tucumcari is the No. 6 seed and will host Newcomb.

The championship will be 1:30 p.m. March 10 at The Pit.

Class 4A girls: Portales, who fell in the District 4-4A tournament title game to Hope Christian, will be seeded fourth and host Pojoaque Valley.

The championship is 3:30 p.m. March 10 at The Pit.

Class 6A girls: The Clovis Wildcats were not selected for the 16-team field.

The championship will be 4 p.m. March 11 at The Pit.
