Businesses warned of fraudulent checks

PORTALES — Police are warning Portales businesses to be wary of cashing checks from a Portales construction company that closed more than 10 years ago.

Portales Police Department Detective Charlie Smart said several individuals have been writing checks to themselves from Kevin Jones Construction Company in Portales and cashing them at local businesses.

Smart said these individuals have gained approximately $8,000 from these transactions. He said he began receiving calls about the incidents in early January and has now identified several suspects, who will have warrants issued for their arrests next week.
