1992: Clovis Solid Waste Coordinator Elizabeth Thomas was preparing for the city's second Environmental Awareness Fair.

"The purpose ... is to educate the public on different aspects of protecting the environment," she said.

"We need to recycle and reduce waste so that we have fewer landfills that can stay open longer and ensure the water quality. We need to protect our environment ..."

1987: Eastern New Mexico University hosted "Festival Francais," a language competition for area schools.

The event included a skit performed by Clovis High students Darren Jones, Danny Damron, Darrin Murphy, Fred Van Soelen, Missy Barnes, Terri Wright and Ginger Gurley.

1977: Three Clovis men — Eddie Fowler, John Alford and Don Threet — had purchased the McFarland Brothers Bank in Logan.

The Clovis News-Journal reported the bank was "one of the oldest banks in New Mexico and perhaps the last family owned bank in the state."

The bank was established about 1903.

Alford had been named president.

Alford, Fowler, Threet and Mr. and Mrs. Robert McFarland comprised the board of directors.
