1977: A regular reader of the "Memo ... from the editor" column in the Clovis News-Journal offered a substitute for coffee.

"Take a potato, peel it and slice it very thin, then bake it in the oven until crisp," Editor Bill Southard wrote.

"Crush the potato slices with a rolling pin until they're as fine as coffee grounds, then pour boiling water over them."

The unnamed reader said the result was delicious, except for one thing: The potato bits had a tendency to float to the top.

"... (A) bit of straining might be in order," Southard wrote.

1962: Quiet Acres Beauty Salon had a new staff member.

Debbie Rash had "advanced training in hair coloring and styling," salon officials reported.

The business was located a quarter-mile west of the city limts on West Seventh Street.
