Incest trial set to move forward

CLOVIS — The trial for a son accused of having an incestuous relationship is moving forward.

Caleb Peterson, 20, faces accusations of having a relationship with his mother Monica Mares, 37.

According to court records, Peterson was adopted as a child, but was reacquainted with Mares after he turned 18 and the relationship soon became physical.

Peterson was not in custody when he appeared for a docket call Tuesday morning at District Court. He is represented by Thomas Harden.

Assistant District Attorney Arwen Gaddis represented the state, appearing on behalf of District Attorney Andrea Reeb.

Gaddis said the state is prepared to move forward, adding the state expects a witness to arrive from out of state for the trial.

Harden said he had no problem moving forward and confirmed with District Judge Fred Van Soelen he has a list of eight witnesses.

When asked by Van Soelen if there were any plea negotiations, Harden said negotiations did not work out.

Gaddis and Harden both said they could not think of any motions they wanted to pursue Tuesday morning.

Peterson’s trial is scheduled for March 23 and 24 with jury selection on March 23. Mares’ trial is scheduled for March 16 with jury selection March 15.
