Clovis squads return to action on Friday at the Lovington Invitational.
Softball — Coach Brandi Thomas knows it’s a work in progress with her young Clovis High softball team, and the Lady Wildcats were given some heavy lessons in this weekend’s 16-team Las Cruces Invitational.
The Lady Cats opened with an 18-1 loss on Friday to Centennial before playing competitively in a 6-4 setback to Las Vegas Robertson. On Saturday, Clovis dropped a 12-8, eight-inning decision to Miyamura and a 9-1 verdict to Alamogordo.
Thomas said the Lady Cats (0-6) learned from the experience.
“It was a tough weekend, but there were some bright spots,” she said. “It was a good learning experience. We got our eyes opened against Centennial, but we got to watch some really good softball.”
Junior Celeste Chavez pitched all but four innings for the Lady Cats, Thomas said, and also hit the ball well. She said Marina Tapia and Daisy Dodge also had some big hits, while third baseman Destinee Sotelo and first baseman Jasmine Lefevre played well in the field.
Down 4-0 in the sixth inning, the Lady Cats rallied to force extra innings against Miyamura at 6-6, but gave up a six-spot in the eighth inning.
“I think we should’ve beaten Miyamura,” Thomas said.
Clovis has a pair of road doubleheaders on tap this week, visiting Roswell Goddard in a 4 p.m. start on Tuesday and former district rival Carlsbad on Friday.
