1982: Curry County commissioners approved a construction site for a planned new jail.

The site was adjacent to the courthouse to the north, where the jail remains today.

Other sites considered were near the 1400 block of West Seventh Street and the 600 block of Axtell Street.

Commissioners said the current jail did not meet federal standards.

They expected construction, which would include a juvenile detention facility, would cost about $4.5 million.
