1967: Bovina held its annual Chamber of Commerce banquet, selecting Jay Sherrill as man of the year and Mrs. J. R. Caldwell as woman of the year.

Leon Grissom was the Chamber’s outgoing president.

Guest speaker was Rev. Kenneth Wyatt, best known for his Christian and Western art work.

1957: A Clovis youth missing for more than three days was returned home after he was found 200 miles away, exploring the Red River.

Lynn Steele, 16, had been missing since claiming he was going to put some things in the family garage, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

A shopkeeper in Memphis, Texas, said the boy bought $4 worth of groceries and said something about following the Red River to the Gulf of Mexico. The concerned shopkeeper notified a local sheriff, who found the boy hiding in tall grass.

He failed to tell his parents about his planned trip because “he knew they wouldn’t let him go,” CN-J reported.
