1992: Spring had arrived on the High Plains, but area residents were wondering what happened to winter.

"Save for a bone-chilling snowstorm in late October and early November, the Clovis weather picture has been unseasonably warm and in some cases even spring-like," the Clovis News Journal reported.

The rest of the nation had also experienced above-average winter temperatures.

Weather record keepers said the 48 contiguous states had an average winter temperature of 36.87 degrees.

"That topped the previous record holder, 1953-54, when the nation averaged 36 degrees," CNJ reported.

But temperatures were not a sign of global warming, National Weather Service Meteorologist Steve Nogueira said.

"It's just the usual cycle of nature," he said.

1972: Gibson's Discount Center was encouraging customers to embrace spring.

A 2-gallon Coleman picnic jug was $7.47.

Charcoal grills were $4.97.

Vinyl garden hoses were $4.57.

Long-handled car wash brushes were 67 cents.
