I have written before that when Hillary lost the presidential election, the Clintons lost their raison d’etre.
Cracks began showing in the Clinton Foundation when they informed the New York Department of Labor that they intended to lay off all 22 of the employees working at the Clinton Global Initiative on April 15, 2017.
The official reason for filing was, “Plant Closing.” The real reason was loss of product. You can’t sell political influence if you don’t have political influence, and you can’t have political influence if you don’t control a political office.
The question then becomes one of how to regain political office. Bill is a non-starter, so it falls to Hillary for another attempt after two devastating losses or to Chelsea for her maiden voyage into the political fray.
Political gadflies and pundits like nothing better than moving the pieces around on the chess board and speculating on what could happen after an unspecified number of moves.
Consider the following scenarios:
It is unlikely that Hillary can wait another eight years for an open presidential election and even more unlikely that primary voters would give her a third bite at the apple. Her one chance seems to be Nov. 7 this year, when an election will be held for mayor of New York City.
One fly in the ointment is the fact that the incumbent mayor, Bill de Blasio, is eligible to run for a second term. On the other hand, New York has given Hillary her only two election victories and could probably be counted on to hand her another one.
A greater risk for Hillary is that mayor of New York is a real job and to date she has shown no capacity to carry out the requirements of an executive position. (See Benghazi, Libya.)
Chelsea’s opportunity assumes New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand will run for president in 2020, opening a Clinton run for the Senate.
There is no guarantee that Gillibrand would step down from her Senate seat even if she chose to run for the presidency. None of the senators who ran for president in 2016 gave up their Senate seat to do so.
Additionally, it is rumored that Carolyn Kennedy would like to run for that Senate seat should it become open.
Although Chelsea has recently been appointed to the board of directors of the travel website Expedia, her employment record remains superficial at best. Chelsea Clinton exhibits even less experience than her mother and also lacks Hillary’s famous warmth and charm.
Is the Clinton dynasty dead? Yes.
