Cats capture fourth place at Amarillo Relays

AMARILLO — Fighting stiff winds on Friday and with some people not available because of spring break, Clovis High’s track teams competed over the weekend in the Amarillo Relays.

The Wildcats finished fourth out of 13 teams in boys competition with 48 points. Meantime, the Lady Wildcats were tied for 10th in a 12-team field, scoring nine points.

CHS boys coach Darren Kelley said his team did well and had some of its better performances of the season against relatively stiff competition.

“Our goal was to score 50 or more points,” he said. “We competed well. The competition was great, but (Friday) may have been the worst weather we’ve competed in (due to the wind).”

The Cats had a pair of third-place showings, with junior Jonathan Williams going 20 feet, 7 inches in long jump and the 800 relay team of Jacob Moon, Austin Fuentes, Micah Gray and Montez Wright posting a time of 1 minute, 32.12 seconds.

The 400 relay team, consisting of the same four runners, and the 1,600 quartet of Josiah Lombrana, Gray, Leroy Wilson and Sebastian Roanhaus, placed fourth with respective times of 43.98 seconds and 3:30.38. Other fourths were notched by Burgin Foster in pole vault (13-6), Austin Fuentes in the 200 (22.93) and T.J. Gregg in the 3,200 (10:36.08), while senior Leroy Wilson posted a Class 6A state-qualifying mark of 40.47 seconds in placing fifth in the 300 hurdles.

For the Lady Cats, senior Brittany Reed was fourth in shot put (36-0) and fifth in discus (117-10), while sophomore Zamaurie Spillman added a sixth in discus (111-8). Both of the discus efforts represented season bests.

Also, junior Kelsey McNaughton claimed fifth place in the 3,200 in 12:16.95.

“We didn’t have all of our kids because of spring break,” CHS assistant Billie Merritt said. “There was some tough competition, some girls who can just flat run.”

Lady Cats coach Dawn Coleman missed the meet because of a family function.

Clovis squads return to action on Friday and Saturday in the Hereford Invitational.
