CLOVIS — Following the discovery of other cities with the pest, a quarantine on pecan weevil affecting Clovis has been extended another 90 days.
To limit the spread of pecan weevil from infested residential trees to commercial orchards, movement of pecans produced within the city limits of Clovis, Roswell, Hobbs, Artesia, and Lovington are restricted.
The original 60-day quarantine, which would have expired Wendesday, did not include Lovington.
Any movement of pecans in the restricted cities must meet department-approved inspections and treatments, which are available at nmdaportal.nmsu.edu/nmda/laws-regulations.
Pecan tree owners are asked to look out for pecans with BB-sized holes in the shells or legless white grubs inside the pecan nut.
Curry County residents who suspect their trees have pecan weevil should contact the county extension office at 575-763-6505.
