Nutritionist explains DASH diet

Information on making a toolbag for life, living and love, the DASH diet, and incorporating hardware items in needlework projects will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday at noon. (All times are Mountain.)

Patricia Bates is an acupuncturist, herbalist and author, and she’s going to show how to make a toolbag for life, living and love. This toolbag combines crafting with self-help in a fun, thoughtful way. You’ll also learn how to make life-action tool cards for your toolbag. She is from Surprise, Arizona.

Registered dietitian and nutritionist Sarah Ryan explains that the DASH diet incorporates 3 servings of dairy each day plus a balance of the other food groups. Simple swaps make the DASH diet easy to follow for breakfast, lunch and dinner. She represents DairyMAX and lives in Conroe, Texas.

Sandy Grossman-Morris is the owner and designer of Sandy Grossman-Morris Design, and she’s going to show how to incorporate things from your local hardware store, such as washers and hex nut covers, into your needlework projects. She is from Brentwood, California.

Information on making denim purses, preparing potato salad three ways and baking with sunflower products will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at noon and on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Author and sewing expert Barb Chauncey will demonstrate making a variety of denim purses based on designs from her latest book. Her company is A Barb Chauncey Design and she’s from Gladstone, Missouri.

Patty Mastracco represents the U. S. Potato Board in Sacramento, California, and she’s going to talk about how to make potato salad three different healthy ways, all of which can be prepared in less than 30 minutes.

John Sandbakken is with the National Sunflower Association, and he’s going to demonstrate how to bake using sunflower products. He’ll also explain what sun butter is, explain how sunflowers “follow” the sun,” and tell why we should include sunflower seed products in our diet. He lives in Mandan, North Dakota.

Layered spinach supreme

• 1 cup buttermilk baking mix

• 1/4 cup milk

• 1/2 cup finely chopped onion

• 4 eggs

• 1 (10-ounce) package frozen spinach, thawed and drained

• 1 1/2 cups (12 ounces) small curd cottage cheese

• 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

• 4 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, cubed

• 2 cloves garlic, crushed

Preheat oven to 375° F. Spray a 12x8x2-inch baking dish with nonstick spray. Mix baking mix, milk, onion and 2 eggs (reserving the other 2 eggs for the cheese mixture); beat vigorously 20 strokes. Spread in dish. Mix remaining ingredients and the 2 reserved eggs. Spoon evenly over batter in dish. Bake until set, about 30 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes before cutting into squares.
