Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
HEREFORD — Clovis High’s boys “weathered” the frigid conditions on Saturday to claim the team championship in the Hereford Invitational track meet.
The Wildcats notched four first-place efforts and finished with 156 points to 149 for runner-up Amarillo Palo Duro in the six-team competition.
Canyon High ran away with the girls’ division, which had five teams, collecting 303 points to 116 for Canyon Randall and 111 for the Lady Wildcats.
Senior Leroy Wilson won the 300 hurdles for the boys, notching a time of 42.10 seconds, while junior Sebastian Roanhaus earned a win in the 400 in a time of 54.09.
The Cats also won a pair of relays, taking the 3,200 event in a time of 8 minutes, 47.52 seconds with Jon Fuentes, David Santarosa, Wilson and Jose Salas, and winning the 1,600 relay in 1:38;48 with Josiah Lambrano, Micah Gray, Wilson and Roanhaus.
CHS boys coach Darren Kelley said his team did a good job of getting people qualified for the finals in Friday’s prelims, when the weather was a little better.
“I’m pleased with how we competed, with the windy weather (on Saturday),” Kelley said. “Yesterday we did a good job of getting to the finals; today, we did a good job of competing.”
For the Lady Cats, senior Brittany Reed captured wins in shot put (35 feet, 11 1/2 inches) and discus (114-5), the latter pacing a 1-3-6 Clovis finish. The Lady Cats also earned second-place finishes in three of the four relay events.
“The 4-by-4 was probably our best race of the day,” CHS assistant coach Billie Merritt said. “With spring break, we were missing some people, but Antanishwa Molett really stepped up (on the first leg of the 1,600 relay). She gave us the lead right off the bat.
The Cats and Lady Cats return to action on Friday in the George/Love Relays at Portales.
