Quay road blocked after shooting

TUCUMCARI — A New Mexico Department of Public Safety Patrol blocked the road leading to a residence on Quay Road 65 for seven hours Wednesday after a shooting was reported.

According to Central Dispatch call logs, at 10:52 a.m., a 911 call was placed to central dispatch reporting a shooting at a residence on the 4200 block of Quay Road 65.

According to a New Mexico State Police press release Thursday, NMSP investigators responded and found Joseph T. Burgess, 25, of Tucumcari dead with a gunshot wound.

The suspect, John T. Coston, 25, of Tucumcari was taken into custody at the scene and booked into the Quay County Detention Center.

Coston has been charged with an open count of murder and tampering with evidence.

Officials did not release other information.
