Editor’s note: This is one in a series of profiles about local graduating high school seniors.
Brayan Navarro hopes to attain a degree in biology from the University of New Mexico, attend medical school, and some day return to Portales to work.
In high school he was a member of National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and played basketball and baseball.
What moment in the last four years has defined you, and why?
It probably was my sophomore year, the year I was invited to ENMU’s cadaver lab and we got to look at a cadaver. I realized how beautiful the human body was, and it’s what I wanted to dedicate myself to the rest of my life.
If you could trade places with anyone for one day, who would it be?
Probably Jake Arrieta from the Chicago Cubs. Probably the best pitcher in the MLB. I want to know what it’s like to be a superstar.
Ch’Ree Essary plans on attending New Mexico State University to study government, after which she will join the air force.
She participated in volleyball, basketball, track, Future Farmers of America, NHS and student council in high school.
What has been your most meaningful high school experience?
Probably doing high school sports. It teaches you a lot of discipline and hard work that you’re going to need to do in the future. You’re going to have to do things that you don’t want to do, and that is what sports have taught me. Because of that, I will most definitely be a better worker and student.
How would you sum up your high school experience in three words?
Busy, fun, and educational.
Adrian Alvarez plans to attend Eastern New Mexico University to earn a pre-medical degree and a business degree, after which he will transfer to UNM to finish his medical studies.
“Then I’m going to try and open my own small clinic and then start my own little business,” he said.
In high school he participated in baseball, basketball, football, FCA and NHS.
Was your senior year your most memorable year? Why or why not?
Probably not. I’d honestly have to say junior year was my most memorable year, because that’s the year we got to go to state for football. That was just a really big part of my life and it made me become more of a leader and it made me more driven for this year. I didn’t really get to play this year much because I got hurt.
How do you picture your life in 10 years?
In 10 years I hope to say that I’m pretty well off by now. I’m gonna have my business steady and running pretty well, or I just want to say that I’m pretty comfortable where I’m at, I’m happy with what I’m doing, and just having enough to provide for my family or whoever I’m with at the time.
David Martinez plans to study animal sciences at ENMU.
In high school he played football, basketball and baseball.
Do you feel prepared to leave high school? Why or why not?
Yeah. Teachers here are pretty good. They help us out a lot.
What is the funniest thing that’s happened to you in high school?
This one time when I was running the ball down the (football) field. I caught a pass and I was running down the field, and right when I got to the 10-yard line, I just fell. I was waiting for everybody and just fell all of a sudden.
