CLOVIS — One of these days, coach Brandi Thomas figures, the Clovis High Lady Wildcats are going to break through.
The Lady Wildcats left just enough runners on base to stay winless for the season, including the bases loaded at the end of a six-run seventh in an 8-7 setback to Eldorado in the second game of Tuesday's District 2-6A makeup doubleheader at Lady Wildcat Field.
Eldorado won the opener 11-1 in five innings on the 10-run rule. The Eagles didn't get to the run rule in the nightcap, but they still had a commanding 8-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Clovis, though, made it tight, only to come up short in the end.
"We've held our own with the No. 10 team (in Class 6A in Manzano) and the No. 4 team (Eldorado)," Thomas said. "It's coming. I'm proud of the girls."
Clovis continued to hurt itself defensively, committing 12 errors in the two games. But the bats came alive a bit.
Thomas said she only wishes the Lady Cats' field — around 230 feet deep to the fences all the way across instead of the normal 200 feet — was more to the smaller size.
"If our field was regulation, we'd probably have sent four or five (balls) out of the yard," she said.
CHS will seek its first win on Saturday when it hosts Santa Fe High in a twin bill set to begin at 1 p.m.
Eldorado 11, Clovis 1, 1st game - The Eagles collected 12 hits and took advantage of seven Clovis errors to win in five innings on the 10-run rule.
The Lady Cats had a chance to extend the game, loading the bases with no one out in the bottom of the fifth on two walks and a single. But Fosness relieved starter Madison Cabauga and got the side out on two force plays at the plate and a strikeout.
Five players had two hits each for Eldorado, with Kayla Marshall driving in two runs and scoring two and Lianne Walk belting RBI triples in both the fourth and fifth innings.
CHS scored in the first on a one-out double by junior Marina Tapia and a two-out single by junior Jazmyne Lefevre.
