Vixens grab early lead in 2A state track

ALBUQUERQUE — Fort Sumner got its bid for an 11th consecutive small-school girls state track title off to a solid start on Friday, grabbing a four-point lead over Logan after three events in Class 2A state competition at the University of New Mexico.

The Vixens have 13 points to nine for the Lady Longhorns. Meantime, Elida’s squads are both second after the first day.

Fort Sumner posted a pair of second-place finishes, with senior Kylie Joiner throwing 97 feet, 11 inches in discus and freshman Teghan Copeland posting a time of 5 minutes, 40.42 seconds in the 1,600. Dora’s Nanie Fait was (94-1) and the Vixens’ Rae-anne Williamson (91-5) were 3-4 behind Joiner.

In Class 1A, Elida had 13 points to 18 for Springer, with Melrose tied for for third with seven points and Floyd fifth with 6. Melrose freshman Nataley Mondragon won long jump at 15-10 with Floyd senior Ch’ree Essary (15-0 3/4) second, while Elida 8th-grader Alyssa Bargas took first in the 1,600 at 5:54.35.

Senior Andrea Loera gave Texico five points, placing second in discus at 104-8.

For the boys, Elida has 17 points to 22 for Reserve, with Melrose tied for fifth with 9. Junior Kaull Burton accounted for more than half of the Tigers’ tallies, placing second in pole vault (11-6) and fourth in long ump (19-11), while freshman Wesley Poling was fourth (11-0) in pole vault.

Melrose junior Jared Lee won the 1A boys 3,200 in 10:36.76, with Elida freshman Emmit Falcon second (11:23.60).

Fort Sumner sophomore earned a third in 2A discus (121-0), while Texico’s Mason Golden was second in the event in Class 3A, throwing 121-10.
