FARMINGTON — Led by senior Thomas Tulk’s 4-under-par 68, the Portales Rams have a share of the first-day lead with Hope Christian in the Class 1-4A state golf tournament at Pinon Hills Golf Course.
PHS and Hope shot 313 for the day, and it’s safe to say it’s a two-team race. Third-place St. Michael’s is third at 342.
Tulk, the defending 1-4A state champion, is in a commanding position there as well. He has a six-shot lead over Raton’s Jason Parker and Hope’s Slater Sivage, who are tied for second.
“We played really well today,” Rams coach Matt Hunton said. “With the exception of Thomas, everyone started really slowly.”
Senior Andrew Underbrink, Talon Payne and junior Austin Davis recovered, though, to shoot respective scores of 80, 82 and 83 to match Hope, which had three of the day’s top seven scores.
Tulk had a bogey-free round.
“He played great all day; he had no 3-putts,” Hunton said. “He was only in trouble on one hole, a par-5, but he made a great fourth shot and then made a putt of about six or eight feet to make par.”
In girls competition, Texico is fourth in the five-team field at 414, followed by Portales at 435. St. Michael’s shot 388 for a seven-shot lead over Silver.
Lady Rams junior Janae Hale came in at 93 on Monday and is currently eighth individually. Meantime, Texico was led by senior Hannah Rucker’s 45-50 — 95.
The Class 3A Lady Wolverines have finished second in each of the last two years.”
“We did all right today,” Texico coach Kristen Scanlan said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to play better tomorrow.”
Class 6A — At Roswell, Clovis High’s squads didn’t have the starts they’d hoped for, with the Wildcats sixth at 324 and the Lady Wildcats fifth at 380 after the first day at Spring River Golf Course.
Sophomore Kolt Bennett and junior Christian Maldonado shot 77s for the Cats. Individual co-leaders at 1-under 71 are Travis Olson of Cibola and Alejandro Armijo of team leader Rio Rancho Cleveland.
Junior David Maldonado was next at 82.
“I was proud of Kolt and Christian and, really, David, the way they kind of held it together,” CHS interim boys coach Dale Fullerton said.
Cleveland shots 305, but finds itself just two strokes ahead of Piedra Vista despite having two of the two five individual scores. Third place is currently held by Manzano at 313.
The Cats’ goal going in was to get a top-three finish and a team trophy.
“I think our kids are still capable of (doing that),” Fullerton said.
Cleveland also leads girls standings at 340, five shots ahead of La Cueva and 10 better than Las Cruces High. The Storm had the top two individual scores, led by junior Jacque Galloway at 1-under 71.
Sophomore Logan Clayton led the Lady Cats with a 42-44 — 86, good for a tie for 10th overall. Junior Raquel Anaya was next at 48-46 — 94.
Clovis was hoping to build on a third-place finish from last season.
“I’m really disappointed for the girls,” coach Steve Speck said. “They had high hopes, and we had a good week of practice. The top three teams played really well today.”
