1972: Ressie Morrison, 41, was busy on the eve of Mother's Day.
Clovis News-Journal reporter Ramon Renteria found the single mom — widowed 11 years earlier — babysitting for a friend while soliciting YMCA memberships during an afternoon in which she also made alterations to a formal gown for one of her younger daughters.
The mother of six was enrolled in classes at Eastern New Mexico University-Clovis, with plans to become a teacher.
"I could teach even if you didn't get any money for it," she told the reporter.
Math was her biggest challenge in class.
"Good grief," she said, "I couldn't even understand the signs."
She said it was "an absolute fallacy" that parents have more time as their kids grow older.
