Heritage Days are here again

PORTALES — The Portales Chamber of Commerce is still calling all vendors and parade participants for the annual Heritage Days event, according to Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karl Terry.

As always, there will be lots of fun to be had at Portales City Park in mid-June, said Terry.

Terry said the chamber is trying to pursue some new activities at the annual Heritage Days event, to be held June 17, such as mechanical bull riding, but in the meantime, the usual activities are slated.

Terry said as usual, a Cannon Air Force Base squadron will run the children’s activities, such as pony rides, water fights and more, and he believes there will be new activities from last year’s event.

“If we don’t have someone bringing a bounce house (like usual), we’ll probably spring for it and get their help,” Terry said.

Then, of course, there is the parade that comes with the event at 10 a.m. and the all-day classic car show. The parade will be will go from Avenue O to Second Street to Abilene and disband at City Park.

“Last year, we had a really great car show. The numbers were really up; we had close to 60 cars last year, and we are getting lots of sign ups already (for this year), so I think we’ll do well on the car show.”

He said a lot of vendors are already signed up as well, but there are still vendor spots open and more sign ups are needed for participation in the parade.

Fun run registration will start at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Yam Theatre with an all new route this year, and the barrel races will be at the fairgrounds again, starting at 3:30 p.m.

“It’s a nice, cool time to come enjoy some music to get things kicked off,” said Terry.
