Clovis man faces 25 years on drug charges

CLOVIS — A Clovis man is facing up to 25 years in prison after being found guilty Friday of a number of felony drug charges.

After an hour of deliberation, a jury found Bernardo Baca, 42, guilty of trafficking controlled substances (a second-degree felony), distribution of marijuana (a fourth-degree felony), tampering with evidence (a fourth-degree felony) and resisting arrest (a misdemeanor), according to a press release by the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

The press release said the charges stem from an incident on May 3, 2016, in which a package containing methamphetamine and marijuana was found in an alley in Clovis. The drugs were found to have originally been placed in the Curry County Adult Detention Center by Baca for his incarcerated girlfriend to pick up.

Baca’s sentencing was postponed until 1 p.m. Wednesday. He is currently serving time in the New Mexico Department of Corrections for two prior convictions for drug possession.
