PORTALES — The National High School Athletic Coaches Association announced on Monday the advancement of Darrell Chenault from Elida High School as a finalist for this year’s NHSACA national coach of the year in the sport of volleyball.
Eight finalists from across the nation will be honored during an awards banquet on June 21, at the organization’s national convention in East Peoria, Illinois. The highlight will be the naming of the NHSACA national coach of the year in 19 recognized sports categories.
“It’s pretty humbling,” Chenault said on Monday. “In my opinion there are a lot more deserving people around — some of the people I’ve looked up to all these years
“It’s a big honor and I appreciate it very much.”
Chenault was selected for nomination for the honor by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. It’s based on longevity, service to high school athletics, honors, championship years and winning percentage.
Coaching volleyball since 2001, Chenault has one of the more impressive career records around, going 290-81 over his time at Elida. He has lead the Lady Tigers to seven straight small-school state titles as well as being named the New Mexico volleyball coach of the year in 2015-16.
Chenault has also had at least 20 wins in his past seven seasons, with an undefeated record in 2014.
The nominees and finalists are evaluated by experts in the field of coaching, using a sport-specific rubrics to assign points in each category.
The NHSACA is the oldest coaches association in the nation formed by coaches and for coaches, and has been recognizing national coaches of the year since 1978.
