1942: Harold Wheeler of Portales had received a scholarship to attend Harvard University.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wheeler was a 1942 graduate of Portales High School.

"The scholarship entitles the winner to a cash amount and assured him of an opportunity to work for the remainder of his college expenses," according to "News from Portales," published in the Clovis News-Journal.

Wheeler said he would major in science.

He was the fourth Portales High grad in four years to be accepted into Harvard with a scholarship.

1942: The Country Store in Clovis offered the following in a paid newspaper advertisement:

• two dozen bananas for 25 cents;

• two dozen oranges for 25 cents;

• 10 pounds of potatoes for 39 cents;

• two cans of White Swan corn for 25 cents;

• a quart of Miracle Whip for 39 cents.
