Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
CLOVIS — Fireworks may fly at High Plains Motorsports this Saturday.
Brad Harris, director of the motor complex at Ned Houk Park is revving up for what he calls the “biggest event of the year” at the track.
About 40 cars are scheduled to race, which Harris said is the most he has ever seen come to the Clovis track.
“They’re some of the fastest cars in the country,” coming from all over the region to race at High Plains, he said.
To celebrate the big race, Harris hopes to have a fireworks display approved by the city commission at its meeting tonight. If approved, the fireworks will go off between races about 10 p.m. Saturday night.
“We’re working hard to get some family entertainment in Clovis,” Harris said.
Commissioners are set to meet at 5:15 p.m. at the north annex of Clovis-Carver Public Library.
Other issues before commissioners include:
• Clovis Municipal Airport is requesting modification of its concession, which allows the city of Clovis to be the sole provider of aviation fuel. This gives the city exclusive authority once the agreement is updated.
• Commissioners are expected to vote on a management contract to run Clovis Civic Center.
• Commissioners will be asked to approve yearly maintenance costs for the 911 Center and Public Service Answering Point totaling $73,142. Over $3,000 of the funds will come from the Clovis Police Department budget.
• Organizers of Draggin’ Main are requesting use of Levine’s Building on Main Street during their week-long event.
The Clovis/Curry Chamber of Commerce will extend liability insurance coverage to the city during its use on June 24.
• Commissioners will consider appointing Betty Jane Williams to serve on Clovis Housing and Redevelopment Agency Board of Commissioners.
• A street closure is requested for a block party scheduled from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. on July 1 in the 1300 block of Broadway street.
Approval is requested for a 5K Fun Run scheduled Sept. 9 as a Ronald McDonald House Fundraiser.
• Commissioners will vote on whether to adopt a procurement certification for the Community Development Block Grant Program.
The certification is a requirement to continue receiving funds for a street improvement project.
