ENMU's Cass earns preseason honor

PORTALES — Clovis High grad Kamal Cass, who has rushed for more than 2,800 yards in his first three seasons at Eastern New Mexico University, has been chosen an all-purpose NCAA Division II preseason All-American by Street & Smith magazine.

Cass, who needs around 1,350 yards this season to become ENMU's all-time rushing leader, has been over the 1,000-yard mark in each of the last two seasons, leading the Lone Star Conference in rushing both years. Last year he finished with 1,191 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns while battling through some nagging injuries.

"Obviously, we have high expectations for him," first-year ENMU coach Kelley Lee said. "The thing about Kamal is he has higher expectations for himself than we have."

Lee was hired earlier this year to replace Josh Lynn as head coach after Lynn took a similar position at Nebraska-Kearney. He had been Lynn's offensive coordinator for the past five seasons, and will continue in that role in 2017.

Cass was a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association last season and named the LSC's offensive back of the year. He has been a first-team All-LSC selection each of the past two years.

The Greyhounds finished 7-5 in 2016 and tied with Texas A&M-Kingsville for third place in the LSC at 6-3.

ENMU players are slated to open practice on August 7. The Hounds' first game is a rematch against Southwest Baptist, which beat ENMU 35-10 in last year's season opener at Bolivar, Missouri, and is ranked No. 8 in Division II in preseason, in a 7 p.m. Thursday contest on Aug. 31 at Greyhound Stadium.
