Rain cuts short 34th Custom Classic

CLOVIS — The Clovis Softball Association hoped to work around anticipated weather issues over the weekend in the 34th Plateau Custom Classic at Guy Leeder Complex. Unfortunately, things didn’t go quite as well as hoped.

The five-division tournament, featuring around 110 teams, managed to complete play in men’s and women’s competitive divisions, but not in men’s D or E or women’s E. Those brackets had to be decided by coin flips — a first in the history of the event, tournament director Roger Jackson said on Monday.

Jackson said tournament organizers hoped to resume around 5 a.m. on Sunday, but eventually it was decided that there wouldn’t be enough time to get the fields ready to play out the remaining games.

One team which got the benefit of the coin flips was Q-Bo in men’s D, a Muleshoe-based team which competes in the Clovis Softball Association.

Q-Bo had a first-round bye in the double-elimination event and actually finished only one game, winning it. The team was playing in its second contest when the rains hit shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday morning.

All the coin flips came up winners for Q-Bo, however.

“It was a messed up deal for everybody,” said Q-Bo coach Miguel Mora, who with his brother formed the team nearly three decades ago and has competed in the Custom Classic pretty much every year.

“It was good teams in there,” Mora said. “We’ve been (in the event) for 29 years, and I believe this had the most competition.”

Mora, who splits time between first base and designated hitter when he plays, said Q-Bo had been in the E class until moving up a couple of years ago.

“It’s been a smooth transition for us,” he said. “The core (players have) been together for years. We always are in the mix (to try to win the tournament).”

Another Clovis squad, Bad Apples, made a run at the women’s competitive title only to lose to Midland-based Hit Cartel-Team DG 29-19 in the finals, a game that just managed to beat the rain.

Coach Richard Weaver said his squad played well through a long day, and he wasn’t disappointed.

“I thought we had a chance to beat them,” Weaver said. “We had several errors that they took advantage of, but I’m not going to take anything away from them.”

It was the third time Bad Apples has finished second over the years in the event, Weaver said.

“We’re always knocking on the door,” he said. “Playing six games in one day is hard enough. Fortunately, we had about 14 players we could use.”

Bad Apples did beat a rival, Amarillo-based Majestic Elite, to reach the final. Weaver said the teams meet regularly on the tournament circuit, adding it was the first time Bad Apples has come out on top.

“I always expect my team to win, or at least compete, so (reaching the final) wasn’t a real surprise,” he said.

Another Clovis team, Funsized, claimed the women’s E championship, while other men’s winners were ftpempire.com of Odessa in men’s competitive and Amarillo’s Boomtown Ballers in the E class.
