Man arrested in Denny's parking lot shooting

CLOVIS — City police have arrested a man who allegedly shot five bullets into a truck in a Denny’s parking lot Saturday night, according to a CPD press release.

Jonathan Romero, 22, was arrested early Monday morning, charged with abuse of a child, shooting from a motor vehicle and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, all felonies.

He remains in the Curry County Adult Detention Center on a $10,000 cash bond. It was not immediately known if Romero had a lawyer yet.

A family member told police she, along with her two young children, drove Romero to the diner on the 4000 block of Prince Street close to midnight Saturday. She said Romero spoke with a person in the parking lot and then “as they were driving away, he sat out of the passenger window of her car, firing a weapon several times.”

Police found five bullet holes in a 2008 Dodge truck belong to a 19-year old who had driven to the diner around 11 p.m. to pick up his mother from work. The victim’s mother said she her son had just gone outside before she heard several loud bangs from the parking lot. In an interview with police, the victim told officers he saw Romero leaning out of a white SUV and firing toward his car.

Officers made arrest warrants and apprehended Romero after a short foot chase around 2 a.m. Monday near Seventh and Jones streets.
