1967: Fred D. Harburg, 18, of Portales was selected as the most outstanding DeMolays member in the state of New Mexico.
The honor, chosen by the International Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay, awarded Harburg a medal as a symbol of superior ability and accomplishment as a young man with the principles of a good citizen.
The DeMolays are a youth organization aimed at young men to groom them into better men and citizens.
1952: Weldon Carmichael of Garrison overturned his pickup in Portales while trying to run over a rattlesnake.
He glanced back to see if he had hit the animal and ran into a ditch, causing the truck to overturn.
Carmichael said there was no serious damage to himself or the snake. He said when he looked back, the snake had disappeared.
