Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
PORTALES — A $284,467 decision on 911 services is on the table at today’s Portales City Council meeting.
The council is considering ratification of an Emergency 911 grant agreement to provide the city eligibiilty for funds to enhance the current 911 services and equipment.
According to City Clerk Joan Martinez-Terry, if the grant is approved, enhancements will allow the communication department to improve response times and incorporate a visual display of the emergency caller in the process.
Also at today’s meeting:
• The council will hear a grant proposal for a DWI prevention specialist.
Martinez-Terry said this position is funded by grant money, which allows for the specialist to provide prevention services to the community, including serving as a liaison between the DWI program and the schools.
If approved, the specialist will provide information to the Portales Municipal School district “mainly to teenage students” about the dangers of driving while intoxicated, and alcohol and substance abuse, Martinez-Terry said.
The individual up for the position is being recommended to the council following training and previous experience with the DWI task force, she said.
This specialist will work closely with grant project coordinator of the DWI program, which will also be determined at today’s council meeting.
According to Martinez-Terry, the program coordinator position is “more for gathering statistics and working with the community coalitions including Roosevelt County Health Council to add to prevention awareness in the community.”
She added that this program started off as a federally funded entity but changed last year to a state run program.
• The council will hear information regarding Disadvantaged Business Enterprise goals for the remaining and upcoming fiscal year.
According to Martinez-Terry, the DBE goal is to obtain federal funds to allocate for the fuel farm at the Portales Municipal Airport.
As of now, Martinez-Terry said, the existing system is outdated.
If approved, companies vying to be contracted for the project will include 6 percent who are disadvantaged businesses.
• Review of the quarterly and yearly fiscal year budgets from 2016-2017.
