1972: Farwell and Texico were preparing to host their sixth annual Border Town Days celebration.

The twin cities on the Texas-New Mexico border had planned a "big parade, old-timers reunion, barbecue" and a junior rodeo performance, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

Most events were slated for Saturday, with the parade scheduled to "inch its way from Texico into Farwell starting at 1 p.m.," the newspaper reported.

The rodeo was expected to attract more than 225 contestants.

1972: Elida High School cheerleaders had attended a clinic in Lubbock with 600 other girls.

They were schooled in "pom-pom routine and tumbling," the Clovis News-Journal reported.

Elida cheerleaders included Ann Howard, Betty McGee, Cindy Good, Sandra Beard and Jami Southard.
