H.S. FOOTBALL: Portales learns a lot from scrimmage

PORTALES — As the football season kicks into gear for the Portales High Rams, their preseason scrimmage Friday — consisting of Eunice, New Mexico Military Institute and Clovis' junior varsity — gave the coaching staff a better insight into what they can expect from each player and opposing teams this season.

"This year we have the opportunity to find out our strengths on offense and defense," Portales head coach Jaime Ramirez said. "This scrimmage allowed us to respond to opposing teams while the season approaches."

The Rams kick off the 2017 campaign at Texico on Friday, and are looking to take each game at a time.

"It's about finding out what we can do well this season," Ramirez said. "It's according to our personnel, and what we can do better after each game."

Quarterback Tyrese Dawson is vying for a starting spot and looking to step up for the Rams, as he played under center most of the scrimmages Friday. He is learning to take on leadership responsibilities, accto his coaches.

"The season is looking good," he said. "Our chemistry is key, because we've been playing ball together since fourth grade. The season will run through me as a leader, and I have to take responsibility."

The Rams will play their first home game Sept. 1 against Lovington.
