Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Tuesday's volleyball roundup

CLOVIS — The Ruth Chavez era of Clovis High volleyball continued its strong start on Tuesday.

CHS rallied from a tough first-game loss to beat Goddard 26-28, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22 at Rock Staubus Gym.

The Lady Wildcats improved to 3-0 so far under Chavez, all at home. They have their next two at The Rock as well, including a 6:45 p.m. tilt on Thursday against Espanola Valley, before finally hitting the road for the Zia Classic at Roswell Sept. 8-9.

CHS lost a game for the first time so far, but stormed back to drop the Lady Rockets to 0-3 for the season.

“It was a good night,” said Chavez, the longtime Portales coach who took over this season for Gabe Apodaca. “We had a good passing night, and we kept our composure.”

Senior middle hitter Lexi Cole combined nine kills, four blocks and 15 digs for the Lady Cats. Junior outside hitter Kassidy Furrow led the team with 15 kills.

“Our serving was good,” Chavez said. “(Senior) Katie Kelley stepped in tonight and served (a team-high) five aces.”

Senior setter Sydni Hill was the third CHS player in double figures in digs with 11, while senior setter Jada Gillespie recorded 41 assists.

Floyd 3, Dora 0

The Floyd Broncos stayed perfect in the early stretch of the season, as Anahi Chavez posted seven service aces in a 25-12, 25-23, 25-22 victory.

Ryan Wallace had six kills, while Chavez added five and Adalee Alvarez had 11 digs for the Broncos.

Floyd is back in action Friday in Tucumcari, when it begins pool play for the Tucumcari tournament.

Texico 3, Lubbock Christian 0

The Texico Wolverines may be off to a later start than the rest of the area, but they seem to be in midseason mode already with a 25-9, 25-13, 25-18 sweep of Lubbock Christian in their season debut.

Maryelle Dickerman and Mackenzie Haakma each had nine kills, while Riley Thompson and Cynthia Reynoso each had six.

Kaylee Miller had 13 assists and Baylee Sours 12. Sours and Mackenzie Clark each had a pair of blocks, while Miller scored a pair of aces.

Texico doesn’t play again until it hosts Tatum Sept. 7.
