1957: A record number of Clovis High School students were planning to attend college. Officials said 50 of the 173 members of the 1957 graduating class had requested transcripts in preparation for applying for higher education.

Most planned to attend Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.

1947: World-champion roper Toots Mansfield of Big Spring, Texas, walked away with the first-place purse from the first Lasso del Llano, billed as the world's greatest steer roping contest, a much-hyped event on the High Plains.

Promotions promised that "12 of the world's greatest ropers" would "trip and tie five wild Mexican steers from the finest horses ever trained." In the end, only 11 competed after one roper had to forfeit because of an ill horse.

Crowds estimated at 10,000 to 12,000 packed the bleachers at the Homer Bennett Arena southeast of Clovis.

Clovis roper Cotton Lee finished third.
