CLOVIS — Portales high school girl's varsity soccer team came to play on Saturday against Pojoaque Valley in Portales.
The girls came out with a strong offense as well as a solid defense to give them a quick 4-0 lead in the first half, and Portales moved on to an 8-0 win Saturday at Greyhound Stadium.
"These girls played great today," said coach Ruben Tellez. "We had better touches today and better teamwork as well as plenty of opportunities that helped us; I was very proud of them."
Rebekah Christensen scored 10 minutes in to put the Lady Rams in the lead. Lillie Saiz added a goal two minutes later, while Saiz and Angie Gonzalez added tallies before the half.
Second-half scorers for Portales (5-2) were Gonzalez again, Sarah Lovato, Micaela Garcia and Kimberlie Hay.
The Lady Rams had 27 shots at goal and five corner kicks on the day.
Rams turn back Elks — In the boys half of the doubleheader, PHS pulled away with a pair of second-half goals to beat Pojoaque 3-0.
Lesther Oliva Andrade scored a pair of goals for the Rams (3-0), the second one late in the match on a penalty kick.
"The guys are playing good and playing hard," Rams coach Nathan Dodge said. "Our young guys are stepping up."
Oliva Andrade's first goal came in the 10th minute and held up until senior Andrew Villegas found the back of the net about 10 minutes into the second half.
"We hit the (goal) post twice," Dodge said of the first half, "but that's the way the game goes sometimes."
Sophomore Brian Tinajero earned the shutout in goal for the Rams, making four saves. Meantime, Portales peppered the Pojoaque goal with 14 attempts.
The Rams are back in action at the PHS pitch on Tuesday, taking on Lovington in a 5 p.m. clash to be preceded by a junior varsity matchup.
