PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team has so far gone to double overtime in both of its games this season.
Unfortunately for the Hounds, they’re still seeking their first win.
Valentina Loza scored 1:52 into the second sudden death period Sunday, helping the Grizzlies steal a 2-1 victory Sunday at Greyhound Arena for their first win in two tries.
The Greyhounds, who tied Fort Lewis 2-2 Friday, led until the closing minutes, when Brenna Flores headed Loza’s corner kick past Alejandra Caramillo in the 86th minute.
The Greyhounds led most of the way, with Keyara Zuniga scoring off of the rebound from an Ariel Lopez free kick in the 10th minute.
Though the loss might have come in frustrating fashion, first-year coach Ryan Spence said he is feeling good with the team’s early progression.
“For us, it’s the little things that are getting to us,” Spence said. “We are doing the big things, but it’s a new coach and a new system. We have growing pains. I feel comfortable, but the little things are missing.
The Greyhounds outshot Adams State 11-9, with the Grizzlies holding advantages of 5-1 in shots on goal and 4-2 in corner kicks.
Eastern heads to San Antonio Friday for a 4 p.m. (MDT) neutral-site matchup against Texas A&M-International.
