Saturday's ENMU soccer and cross country results

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Dixie State’s Tommy Merniez scored his first goal of the season with just over four minutes left, and the Trailblazers edged Eastern New Mexico University 1-0 in a neutral-site men’s soccer match on Saturday.

Merniez scored in traffic in front of the net to break the deadlock, with DSU’s Jardin Porta credited with an assist on the play. The Trailblazers (3-0) posted a 5-3 advantage over the Greyhounds (1-2-1) in shots on goal.

ENMU earned its first win of the season on Thursday, edging host Colorado-Colorado Springs 5-4 in double overtime. Dixie faces the Mountain Lions (0-3) in the round-robin finale on Monday.

ENMU is slated to open its home schedule at 7 p.m. on Thursday against Oklahoma Christian at Greyhound Stadium.

Cross country — At Lubbock, both ENMU squads finished sixth out of 10 teams in the college division of the Texas Tech Open cross country meet on Saturday.

South Plains College took men’s team honors with 52 points to 55 for Lubbock Christian, with the Greyhounds finishing at 137. West Texas A&M won women’s competition with 55 points to 66 for Wayland Baptist, while the Hounds came in at 157.

Junior Omer Almog of Isreal led the ENMU men, placing seventh in an 8-kilometer time of 26 minutes, 11.20 seconds. Senior Coley Norcross led the Hounds in the women’s division, coming in 26th with a 5K time of 19:48.40.

No other ENMU runner finished above 46th place in the event. Individual winners were Bernard Keter, who ran unattached, for the men in 25:01.00 and Ester Gitahi of New Mexico Junior College in 17:32.20 for the women.

ENMU’s next outing will be on Sept. 23 in Las Vegas, New Mexico, in the New Mexico Highlands Cross Country Jam.
