1987: An investigation was continuing on the debris of an F-111 jet that had crashed two days earlier on 21st Street about three miles west of Clovis High Plains Hospital.

Pilot Maj. John Sides and weapons systems officer Maj. Russell Stricker had parachuted to safety moments ahead of the crash and were in stable condition at the 27th Tactical Fighter Wing Hospital at Cannon Air Force Base.

They had been returning from a routine training mission when the jet spun out of control and crashed.

1972: Kathy Grider, the 16-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grider of Melrose, was reigning as queen of the 1972 Roosevelt County Fair. The Melrose High School junior edged out Dottie Berry of Portales for the title.
