COMMERCE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Commerce footbALL team didn’t need long to show why they’re the class of the Lone Star Conference, but Luis Perez had gave Eastern New Mexico quite a reminder in the second quarter.
With the host Lions already up 13-3 after one quarter, Perez unloaded for four of his five touchdown passes on the day, and Texas A&M-Commerce posted 445 yards of offense in a 51-22 blasting of the Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon at a packed Memorial Stadium.
Darrion Landry caught seven passes for 112 yards for the Lions (3-0), including catches of 64 and 23 yards in the second quarter.
Perez also connected with Vincent Hobbs on a 56-yarder late in the first quarter, added scoring tosses of 54 yards to D’Arthur Cowan and 15 to Buck Wilson in the second quarter and rushing for a 6-yarder himself in the third quarter.
His only glaring mistake on a 357-yard passing day was a pass that got intercepted by ENMU’s Dakota Montoya and taken 3 yards for the score late in the second quarter. But he answered that 31 seconds later with his 23-yarder to Landry to close out a 41-15 first half.
The Lions never trailed, going up on Carandal Hale’s 3-yard run 2:54 into the game, and finished the scoring on a 25-yard Kristov Martinez field goal.
The Greyhound offense managed just one scoring drive in each of the first three quarters — a Bailey Hale 48-yard field goal in the first, a D’Maujeric Tucker 11-yard run in the second and Wyatt Strand scoring on a 2-yard keeper with 8:15 left in the third.
The Greyhounds return home Saturday, and will face Angelo State for homecoming. The Lions host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.
