Midwestern improves to 6-0 with win over Greyhounds

PORTALES — Midwestern State's men's soccer team is No. 8 in the country for plenty of reasons. They're most of the reasons the Greyhounds are now even in the Heartland Conference.

The Mustangs handled business Saturday at Greyhound Stadium, holding the host Greyhounds to just one shot on goal in a 4-0 win to push their record to 6-0 on the year.

Four different players scored for Midwestern State (6-0, 2-0 Heartland) and backup goalkeeper Richard Goss posted his third shutout in the last four games to give the Greyhounds (2-3-1, 1-1) their first home loss in nine games dating back to last September.

"I like this turf, it's nice," Midwestern coach Doug Elder said. "We've got a really technical team. We can pass the ball pretty quickly, and that helps on turf."

Sebastian Venegas had a goal and an assist for the Mustangs, assisting on Koby Sapon-Amoah's breakaway to start the scoring 28 minutes in and booting in the final goal with 8:35 left from 20 yards out.

Pierre Bocquet and Carlos Flores also scored for Midwestern State, with Bocquet assisting on Flores' goal.

"I thought we played stronger in the second half," ENMU coach Paul Tate said. "It's hard to rally back against them. That's the reason they're eighth in the nation."

Elder credited Goss for making a save he had to make and for squelching a few ENMU shot opportunities on slightly errant passes. Additionally, the defense was ready to go after watching a livestream of ENMU's Thursday win over Oklahoma Christian.

"They tried to go over the top," Elder said, "and they weren't able to do that as well as they did against OCU."

The Greyhounds have two games remaining on their homestand — 7 p.m. Thursday against St. Mary's and 1 p.m. Saturday against Texas A&M-International.
