1972: Work was expected to continue for three to four days to clear a 23-car train wreck that had happened near St. Vrain the day before. The accompanying Clovis News-Journal photo described the scrambled cars as a "fruit salad," since the derailed freight included 16 loads of table grapes, a load of oranges, and several carloads of canned goods.
It took four hours for firefighters from Melrose, Clovis, Portales, and Cannon Air Force Base to snuff the flames that broke out after a rupture in the fuel line that fed the diesel motors of one of the mechanically refrigerated cars carrying fresh fruit.
1962: In "Elida Notes," compiled by Velma Hathcock, came news that LoVita and LaVerne Cochrain, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Monte Cochrain, won a "Talent Find" contest at the county Farm Bureau meeting in Portales. The sisters performed "I Almost Lost My Mind," accompanied by Mrs. John Werner of Elida.
Harding Burris of Halo Jersey Farm also made the "Elida Notes." He was off to Abilene, Texas, to show his prize-winning Jerseys, and had plans to also compete at the Texas State Fair in Dallas and the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque.
